Books: The Monk of Mokha (Dave Eggers)

The Monk of Mokha is the story of Mohktar Alkhanshali, who is an American whose family is from Yemen. The book chronicles Mohktar’s life arch from struggling youth until becoming a successful Yemen coffee trader. I think this book was really a great read because it shows the power of human determination. For a majority of his life, Mohktar was a man without a mission; however, once he heard about Yemen coffee, and how Yemen was the country that first grew coffee, Mohktar made it his mission to bring back the trade to his ancestoral homeland.

In addition to covering Mohktar’s journey, Dave Eggers also does a great job of talking about the history of coffee. The combination of both stories makes for both an interesting, as well as historically important book. I think this book would appeal to many types of readers, as it is informative, positively uplifting (while also being realistic and showing Mohktar’s struggles), and not too difficult to read.

I think Mohktar’s story is something that really needs to be read, and his determination was really incredible. After reading the book, you will see that just him being alive now is incredible, much less him also succesfully bringing the coffee trade back to Yemen. This book really demonstrates that with hard work, perseverance, time, and a lot of luck, people really can make a huge difference by making gradual process.

Please give it a read when you have some time!

This is a blog for myself (and hopefully others) to keep track of all of the places, restaurants, books, movies, etc. that I do not want to forget. I am a college student who has lived in the US, Asia, and Europe for extended periods of time; I am very lucky to have had these experiences, and I want to share my recommendations with people interested in any of these locations.

NONE of these posts are advertisements. I do not have any discount codes or promotions for anything I write about; however, this should be considered a positive because it means that everything I write about reflects my true feelings. In order to keep this blog positive, my posts will only be recommendations for the things I enjoy the most in life. The topics will vary between whatever subjects I am interested in at a certain time, and I will have 1-2 new posts per day.

I wish I could have started this project earlier while some of my memories were fresher in my mind, but it is better late than never. I hope that other people will have the chance to visit or experience things that I write about, and I hope that people will have a similar taste in life to myself!
