Free Solo is an incredible documentary about a rock-climber named Alex Honnold. It is now on Disney+ and other streaming platforms, so it should not be too difficult to find a place to watch it. If you watch the film, I think your hands will start to sweat even if you are just sitting on the couch.
Basically, the film is about Alex Honnold and his desire to climb El Capitan in Yosemite (pictured above). If you have never heard of El Capitan (like me before I watched the film), wait until you see it in the movie. It does not even look possible to climb, and this is true even if you are using ropes. However, Honnold takes it one step further, and he wants to free-climb it; this means that he does not have any ropes or support, and he has to do it all in one continuous climb without stopping. If he makes one mistake on the climb, he will literally fall 3000 feet to his death.
After watching this documentary, I have so much more respect for climbers, and especially free climbers. The amount of mental strength they have is incredible, even if they are crazy. Honnold even says in the film that he does not have a sense of fear, so free-climbing a mountain is the only thing that can give him even a little bit of adrenaline.
The movie was shot by famous photographer Jimmy Chin, who had to be alongside Honnel for the climb (although he was wearing a harness). The entire movie is exactly 100 minutes, and you will be on the edge of your seat for all of it. It is definitely a must-see experience for any type of moviegoer.
This is a blog for myself (and hopefully others) to keep track of all of the places, restaurants, books, movies, etc. that I do not want to forget. I am a college student who has lived in the US, Asia, and Europe for extended periods of time; I am very lucky to have had these experiences, and I want to share my recommendations with people interested in any of these locations.
NONE of these posts are advertisements. I do not have any discount codes or promotions for anything I write about; however, this should be considered a positive because it means that everything I write about reflects my true feelings. In order to keep this blog positive, my posts will only be recommendations for the things I enjoy the most in life. The topics will vary between whatever subjects I am interested in at a certain time, and I will have 1-2 new posts per day.
I wish I could have started this project earlier while some of my memories were fresher in my mind, but it is better late than never. I hope that other people will have the chance to visit or experience things that I write about, and I hope that people will have a similar taste in life to myself!
