The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is like an even more exclusive Michelin guide. As you can see by the name, it is an annual guide for the 50 best restaurants in the world; many of the restaurants do overlap with the Michelin-guide (most are also rated 2-3 Michelin stars). Still, if you want the best possible food experiences, these 50 are the top of the top.
If you take a look at the list, many of the restaurants are in non-traditional locations. While the Michelin guide has a ton of 3-star Michelin restaurants in cities such as Tokyo and New York, there are not as many of those restaurants here. For example, the 2019 top 5 has 2 restaurants in Copenhagen, 1 in France (Menton), 1 in Spain (Axpe), and 1 in Thailand (Bangkok). This shows that the tasters for the 50 Best have really traversed the globe to find some of the best fine dining restaurants.
Even if you have no desire to pay $100s+ for a meal, I think it is worth taking a look at the list. Just looking at it and the restaurants in it will give you an idea of what food can really be. Nowadays, the top restaurants are really trying to use plating, unique ingredients, and the overall dining experience to differentiate themselves, while also trying to maintain great tasting food. I think it is just a really interesting thing to learn more about, even if this is the type of food you may only get the chance to eat once in your lifetime (if you are lucky).
Sadly, the new list for 2020 had to be delayed due to the coronavirus, so the list will still be the same one as 2019. However, hopefully once the world begins to reopen, these restaurants will be able to start serving incredible meals again.
