Disclaimer: I know this is just a small personal, blog of mine, but after hearing and seeing a lot of different things from my friends (especially from posts on Instagram), I just wanted to give my recommendation for best practices in these difficult times. I cannot say whether my opinions are correct or helpful, and whether you want to continue reading is up to you. However, given the gravity of the situation, I thought it was important to at least discuss it.
I think that in these current times, it is more important than ever to do your own research, and not always do stuff just because you see other people doing them. For example, the “Blackout Tuesday” pictures that have been posted millions of times on Instagram have the right intention (to spread awareness against racial injustice); however, they have also made it difficult for activists (who have spent years creating the space on Instagram) to have a place to guide people to the right resources. Both groups have the same positive mission, but since they are going about trying to solve it in different ways, the result can be counterproductive.
It is great to see that people both from my generation and others have taken the initiative to try and fight this issue that has been around for far too long; however, as many people have said, it will take consistent action, and not just an Instagram post, to get rid of racism around the world.
Once again, I am happy to see that there are so many people around the world who feel so passionate about trying to make the world a more inclusive place; however, just make sure you are always conducting your own research and due diligence to learn how to best push the movement forward. This can help to avoid protesting methods that have good intentions, but actually end up working against supporting the cause.
With Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. it is incredibly difficult to discern what is true vs. false, and what is good vs. bad; also, it is easier to share your message than ever before. This is why, once again, it is more important than ever to make sure you have your facts checked, and that what you are doing is truly helping to further the cause you support.
I hope everyone can make productive and informed statements so that the world can become a better place (because it really needs it right now)!
