Criminologist Himura and Mystery Writer Arisugawa is a Japanese show on Rakuten Viki. Even though it is a little hard to tell from the name, it is very similar to another Japanese take on Sherlock Holmes.
Personally, I thought this was just as good, if not better than Miss Sherlock. Considering I have already posted about Sherlock and Miss Sherlock, it should be obvious that I am a big fan of Sherlock Holmes’ shows. It is just such a classic story line that if it is told well, it will always catch my attention.
In the show, the main two characters are Hideo Himura, a criminologist who also works as a college professor. I think his character is very interesting because he also has dark tendencies, but he tries to funnel all his energy into his detective work. Also, his dark side is partly complemented by the energy and good hearted nature of Arisugawa, who is his sidekick (basically Watson to his Sherlock).
Arisugawa is a mystery writer who helps to control Himura and make sure that he is always using talents for good. They have a great relationship, and the rest of the characters are good as well. There is a Moriarty like character who you will see if you watch the show, and even though it is not developed until later in the show, she plays a big role. Everything begins to pick up in episodes 6-10.
If you are a mystery fan, this is definitely a show you should watch. If you are trying to learn Japanese like me, it is also a great show to watch. The best way to watch the show would be to use a Roku or another streaming device to get the Rakuten Viki channel.
