I was given the book “The Coddling of the American Mind” by a friend of mine. I thought that it was definitely a good book, and something that is even more relevant in this current time/situation.

This is a bit different from the normal type of book I read (I read the most business books, science fiction, or sports books), but it was a good change of pace. The book talks about the current education system, current parenting methods, and “3 untruths” that are prevalent in society today that actually have a negative impact.

I think this is a book that readers will agree with in a lot of parts, but also maybe have differing opinions in others. Still, I thought there were a ton of great points, and a ton of information that people should learn about. For example, I think the authors touched upon a lot of great points about how to improve the education system; one point they made is that students tend to be overprotected, which goes against the purpose of many colleges (which is to prepare students for the real world and make sure that they meet people with different opinions and viewpoints as themselves).

There is a distinction between people with differing opinions, some of which may be unpopular, and people with opinions and beliefs that actively threaten other people. It seems that nowadays, a lot of people tend to mistake unpopular beliefs with threatening and harmful beliefs, and this is something the authors try to address.

Overall, I think it is a book that I would read, especially in these current times. To get a short preview of what the book is similar to, read this article (which was later elongated and turned into the book).

The Coddling of the American Mind Recommendation Rating: 3

1: Something worth checking out if you have time

2: Something that is a hit for some people, but not a must for everyone

3: Something worth prioritizing if interested

4: Something worth making time to check out

5: An absolute home run, worth going out of your way for
