The most recent Japanese drama that I finished is called Pretty Proofreader, and it is on Rakuten Viki. The title sounds super unappealing, and there is no way I would have watched it if I didn’t read about it on Google (or see its’ 9.3/10 rating on Rakuten Viki).
The concept of a proofreader (as in the people who proofread articles/books before they are released) does not seem like the most interesting. However, the show itself is actually incredibly entertaining. I really enjoyed the entire show, and I thought the casting was perfect.
The drama follows Kouno Etsuko, a young woman who dreams about working for Keibonsha, a publishing company. She tries for years and years to become an editor at the company; after 7 years, she finally gets offered a job, but it is only in the proofreading department. This department is known as the most boring in the company, and it is seen as extremely undesirable. However, Etsuko views it as a potential stepping stone to a future editing job.
The entire show is 11 episodes, and over time Etsuko falls in love with the proofreading department. The entire department also changes because of Etsuko’s energy, and it is an incredibly enjoyable/humorous drama. Although Etsuko and the rest of the cast may seem strange at the beginning, they will definitely grow on you over time. This is another must-watch Japanese drama!
