WordPress is the website that runs most sites; I saw an article recently that said WordPress now powers 38% of the Internet. It is used by so many people from people who are just trying to build a simple website (such as myself) to more complex websites built by businesses.
I think that WordPress is a popular option because it offers a lot of great features and support. There is both a free and a premium option, and the free version is a great one to start off with (before you try to build an audience). Once you start to gain more traction, or want to build a more comprehensive website, there are options to upgrade (the base plan is around $100 or so per year, while there are business options that can run a couple of hundred dollars). It really depends what you are trying to accomplish with your website, but it is a really versatile option.
Another great thing about WordPress is that it is pretty easy to use, and it has a lot of pre-built themes that are great for non-computer science people. While building a website using HTML allows for more customization options, it is not really feasible unless you have a tech background (or if you hire someone to build it for you).
Overall, I would say that WordPress is a kind of Goldilocks option for most websites. In my opinion, it is better than sites like Wix and Squarespace because it is much more versatile, as well as allowing things such as plug-ins to enhance your site; on the other hand, it is more user-friendly than build-it-yourself sites, which is good for users on a limited budget or who are just starting out.
