How Much Does it Cost to Join Augusta National?

While I normally write about things I recommend, I want to have more variation. I will continue to do recommendations of things I come across, but I also want to post my findings of questions that I have (on any topic). These are not questions unique to myself; however, I have taken the time to research the topics and find out the answers. When I find an article that has been written about the subject, I will simply summarize the findings and direct you to the article (for further investigation).

With The Masters currently going on, I was curious in learning about how much it costs to become a member of Augusta National Golf Club. Augusta is known as one of the nicest golf courses in the world, and definitely one of the most exclusive clubs. It is not open to the public, and you can only golf there if you are a member or if you know a member (and you have to be invited to become a member).

According to Golf.com, the initiation fee to join Augusta National is about $40,000, with a couple thousand in yearly dues. Although this is a lot of money for normal people, it seems on the low side to me, as I would have thought it would cost more to join one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.

However, I think being a member of Augusta National is more for the prestige than for the money. You cannot ask to be considered for a membership, and even if you get through the initial screening stages there is still a significant vetting process. Also, as mentioned in the Golf.com article, as well as a separate Bloomberg article, there are only about 300 members of Augusta at one time. Augusta does not release the names of its members though, so no one can be sure of who exactly is part of the 300 or so members (although they are definitely very wealthy and well known people).

I would love to have the opportunity to one day golf at Augusta, although it is very unlikely I will ever get this chance. For now, the best I will be able to do is watch The Masters on TV, but I did learn more about the invitation process at Augusta National Golf Club!
