Best Japanese TV Shows to Watch: The Good Doctor

There is a popular show on ABC right now called The Good Doctor, and it is based on a show that was originally produced in Korea. However, there is also a Japanese version of the show that came out in 2018 on FUJI TV.

The Japanese version has a doctor named Shindo Minato (played by Kento Yamazaki). Minato is an aspiring pediatric surgeon who is trying to earn his way up through the medical profession, even as he faces so many challenges along the way. At the beginning, a lot of the poor treatment Minato receives come from both his patients parents’ (who don’t feel comfortable with him treating their kids), as well as from fellow doctors (who do not think he should be a doctor).

The show is super inspiring because it represents that you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it. Minato has to go through so much more than a doctor without disabilities would have to, but in the end he is able to earn the respect of all his colleagues and patients.

All of the storylines in the Japanese version of The Good Doctor are incredibly emotional, and the episodes are much more heartfelt than the American version. While I think the American version is a good show, it doesn’t make you feel the same way as the Japanese one after watching it. Unfortunately, I have never watched the Korean one yet, so I cannot comment on how it compares to the Japanese version; however, considering it is the original and has been made in two other countries as well, I am guessing it is very good.

The Japanese version of The Good Doctor is difficult to find on any US channel, so you have to look around on various websites to try and find it. If you speak Japanese though, I believe you can watch the version without subtitles on FUJI TV. Overall, the Japanese version of The Good Doctor was an incredible show, and one of the most emotional and touching dramas I have seen. I am really hoping they produce a Season 2 sometime in the near future!

The Good Doctor Recommendation Rating: 5

1: Something worth checking out if you have time

2: Something that is a hit for some people, but not a must for everyone

3: Something worth prioritizing if interested

4: Something worth making time to check out

5: An absolute home run, worth going out of your way for
