Pioneer Saloon is a restaurant in Hawaii that has a lot of local Hawaiian dishes with a Japanese flair. Pioneer Saloon has two locations, with one located on Monsarrat and the other in SALT. I have only done takeout from the Monsarrat location, but I think both locations are supposed to be good.
Pioneer Saloon had an exceptionally good menchi katsu, and I would consider it among the best on the island. For those who have never had menchi katsu before, it is a hamburger like katsu made out of pork. It is one of my favorite dishes, and it goes really well with Japanese curry. Pioneer Saloon’s menchi is great because the breading is crispy and light.
However, even if you are not a menchi katsu fan, Pioneer Saloon has a ton of other options to try as well. Dishes like their fried chicken, rib eye steak, mahi mahi were really strong. Their fried chicken had a great sauce, and it tasted like a really good karaage. You can check out their full menu here!
Pioneer Saloon is not in the most convenient location unfortunately, and it can be difficult to find parking around the area. There are a lot of other restaurants in the area as well, so sometimes the street parking is all full. It is best to have someone to pick up the food and another person drive around; also, walking is a convenient option if you are located close enough!
