Best Websites/Apps to Visit: The Athletic

I am a huge sports fan, and I am constantly on ESPN/Bleacher Report checking for the latest updates. This is mostly for scores though, as both ESPN and Bleacher Report tend to have the latest updates, but not as many in-depth news pieces.

My true favorite sporting website is actually The Athletic. The Athletic, unlike the other major news sources, is a subscription based website/app. The subscription costs $59.99 a year, but they are constantly running specials and giving away good deals to lesson the price. I personally love The Athletic because it has so many great writers for every single major sport (NBA, NFL, MLB, Soccer, College Sports, etc.); also the content differs from ESPN because The Athletic does long-form writing pieces. While ESPN is great to get daily updates on the sporting world, the Athletic is the best way to truly be a sports connoisseur and get the most in-depth analysis.

While I realize that not everyone is interested in sports, if you are someone who is interested in reading about sports, I believe The Athletic is well worth the subscription price. I would think of it as the WSJ for sports fans.

The inspiration for this blog actually partially came from The Athletic. There is a writer for The Athletic named Joe Posnanski, and he mainly writes about baseball. He wrote about his favorite 100 baseball players of all time, and these were all long-form stories about the lives and careers of these players. It is something that I really looked forward to reading every morning when it was being released, and it made me want to start my own long-form blog.

I know that not everyone wants to take 5-10 minutes reading a long-form article, but I believe The Athletic’s are worth reading since they are well-written and unlike pieces you can find elsewhere.

The Athletic Recommendation Rating: 3

This post has now been updated to reflect a new ratings system that I have implemented, which is scored as follows:

1: Something worth checking out if you have time

2: Something that is a hit for some people, but not a must for everyone

3: Something worth prioritizing if interested

4: Something worth making time to check out

5: An absolute home run, worth going out of your way for
