Choosing Spouse by Lottery is a drama with an interesting concept on Rakuten Viki. The show is completely fictional, but it proposes a Japanese society in which anyone from the ages 20-38 (who are not currently married) gets randomly matched with people from their age group.
The pairings are completely random, and the only way you can get out of the partnership is to use one of your three rejections (after which you receive a significant punishment) or if your match does not meet your qualification (each candidate can write down one quality that their partner must match).
This type of marriage experiment sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is not out of the realm of possibility for a country like Japan to introduce. The reason they introduce it into the show is the declining birth rate in Japan, which is a legitimate problem that Japan has been dealing with for a while.
Choosing Spouse by Lottery is only 8 episodes of 45 minutes each, and each episode goes a bit deeper into the problems of the law and how people are attempting to fix it. It is really a great story with a lot of character development, especially from the main character. The main character was bullied when he was young, which has left him socially awkward and unable to talk with girls; however, because of the new law he begins to break out of his shell and become a leader of society. The story also has a bunch of highs and lows for all of the main characters, which makes for an interesting drama throughout!
