Food Wars is the latest anime that I finished watching on Netflix. I had a bunch of friends who had told me about the show previously, but it took me some time before I was able to get into the show.

Like many other Japanese anime, Food Wars takes a relatively mundane topic (cooking) and turns it into an over-the-top competition that spans the course of 75+ episodes. The first 4 seasons of Food Wars are really great, although there is a significant drop off in the 5th and final season (I only watched the last episode of the 5th season because I heard it wasn’t worth watching).

The best thing about Food Wars is the characters; in my opinion Food Wars has some of the most memorable characters from any anime I have watched. The main character, Yukihira Soma, is a super positive character who is always fighting to create change. He drives most of the show, but also brings out the best in other characters (Tadokoro, Erina, Hayama, etc.). The supporting characters are also extremely likable and important, and I would say Food Wars is right behind Hunter x Hunter in terms of characters.

There are some weird aspects of Food Wars (mainly the fan service of the show) that take some time getting used to. I think it is unnecessary and detracts from the show at many points; however, as long as you can get past this aspect the storyline and characters make Food Wars a must watch anime!

Food Wars Recommendation Rating: 5

1: Something worth checking out if you have time

2: Something that is a hit for some people, but not a must for everyone

3: Something worth prioritizing if interested

4: Something worth making time to check out

5: An absolute home run, worth going out of your way for
