I used to go to Japanese Restaurant Aki quite often when it was in its old location (next to Ala Moana), but I hadn’t been in a while to its new location in Kaimuki. I just went again recently though, and I was impressed by both the quality and diversity of food options.
Japanese Restaurant Aki has basically any type of Japanese food you can imagine, ranging from yakitori to teishoku items to shabu shabu to sushi to udon. Whatever Japanese food you are craving, you can almost assuredly find at Aki.
While it may seem like there are too many options for it too really good, I thought all of the items I ordered were quite good quality wise. The yakitori is solid and with a variety of of options, the fish quality for the sushi was good, and teishoku items such as misoyaki butterfish were great as well. I didn’t try the hot pot or udon, but I am sure those would be good.
The atmosphere of Aki is nice, as it is a covered outdoor location (the top is covered, but there are no windows). This allows for good ventilation, and as long as it is not too hot it is great. If you are looking for a new Japanese restaurant to try in Hawaii, I would recommend Aki!
