One of my favorite recent anime is called Aoashi, and it is a soccer anime. There are a lot of similarities to Haikyuu, although I would say Aoashi is less dramatic and not as over exaggerated as Haikyuu (both good and bad).

Aoashi is about a soccer player named Aoi Ashito and his rise throughout the soccer ranks. So far, there is only one season (it is just about to end), and it follows him from his local village soccer team up to one of the premier youth soccer academies in Japan.

If you have watched Haikyuu before, Aoi Ashito is similar in a lot of ways to Hinata, in that they are both exceptionally talented but unrefined players. They also have a lot of grit and tenacity that shows in their games.

I am no soccer expert, but I do have a basic understanding of the game. I think this is all that is really required to watch Aoashi, and watching it may even help inspire you to watch or play soccer in real life. So far it is a good anime, and I hope that there will be future seasons of Aoashi!
